In what can only be described as a shock to the US and UK film societies, acclaimed director Anthony Minghella has passed away. The associated press is reporting the death, but at this time has not released any additional details.
Minghella became well known with his Academy Award winning film, The English Patient. In addition, he directed the Matt Damon thriller, The Talented Mr. Ripley and the Nicole Kidman epic, Cold Mountain.
Minghella has been busy the last few years with several political themed thrillers, including "Iris," "Heaven," "The Quiet American," "The Interpreter," "Catch a Fire" and "Michael Clayton".
He was 54. Condolences here from Devon Lohan to his friends and family.
