Red State Review

Back when I was a little lad, my life was changed forever at my parents video store when a box of screeners from Miramax came along which included both Pulp Fiction, and Clerks. The moment I saw Clerks I was instantly hooked and a Kevin Smith fan from then on out. Some 15 give or take a couple years later, he has announced he is only doing two more movies before hanging it up. Red State, and Hit Somebody.

Now even though I have been a huge fan of Kevin Smith, I am also a horror movie geek. So when I first heard the news of both those worlds coming together, I felt a shift in my bowels. Red State never played in any theatres here in AZ, so I had to count the days to Sept 1st. When it would finally arrive in iTunes and VOD.

Red State is the first movie in a very, very long time that took my totally by surprise. There are no heroes, there are no typical movie moments. It is one of those rare movies that you have no clue as to where things might lead, and anything can and does happen at any moment. You get introduced to a new character to only have them wiped out seconds later. I avoided all reviews, boards, threads, tweets, articles, everything I could to try to remain as spoiler free as I could going into the movie so I am keeping this review of it the same. If you are a Kevin Smith fan, you will love this movie. If you are not a Kevin Smith fan, you will love this movie. It has moments where I literally sat up out of my damn recliner and said "holy shit" out loud to myself and thought about pausing the movie or just, doing something because I was taken so off guard by what had happened I didn't know what to do with myself. All bets are off in this movie.

The acting in this is stellar. Even if a character has just a couple minutes of screen time, they are remembered for those few brief moments. This entire cast deserves a standing O.

Red State is disturbing, its fresh, its possibly the best movie of 2011. And quite possibly the best movie of Kevin Smiths career. It is a damn shame and makes a fan like myself sad to see someone I have watched grow as a film maker take a huge risky leap and accomplish such an achievement knowing that they are going to be doing no more.

Kevin Smith no longer making films, is a huge loss to the movie world. Mainly because there needs to be more people like him making movies today.

Banned in the US, the Zach and Miri Poster.

So basically, as we already know, the MPAA is a bunch of old fucking prudes that don't like anything funny or slightly edgy. So in a nice little FUCK YOU to Kevin Smith, they've banned the posted for Zack and Miri Make a Porno. We already know they tried to stick the film with an NC-17 rating, which Smith got overturned to an R rating. So this is clearly their way at still getting back at him.
Smith says the MPAA won't give their blessing to the image shown here—which is available and all over in Canada. "When you've got the word 'porno' in the title, naturally, the marketing materials are gonna be scrutinized more closely by the MPAA," says Kevin. "I understand they've got a job to do, but c'mon...this image isn't that dirty; they're both fully clad."

Kevin Smith wins appeal, "Porno" to be rated 'R'!

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Filmmaker Kevin Smith has won an appeal to lower the adults-only NC-17 rating for his comedy "Zack and Miri Make a Porno," to an R rating.

Motion Picture Association of America spokeswoman Elizabeth Kaltman said Tuesday the rating was revised after the group's appeals board viewed the movie.

The NC-17 rating would have prohibited anyone younger than 17 from seeing the movie. With an R rating, those under 17 can see it in the company of an adult.

"Zack and Miri," due out Oct. 31 from the Weinstein Co., stars Seth Rogen and Elizabeth Banks as best friends and roommates who try to make a homemade porn flick to dig themselves out of debt.

Zach and Miri Make an.... NC-17 rating?

At a press conference for his latest R-rated comedy, Pineapple Express, Seth Rogen revealed that his next film might get the dreaded NC-17 rating. He stars in Kevin Smith’s latest, Zack and Miri Make a Porno, which is fighting for an R.

“I would say it’s pretty dirty language-wise,” said Rogen. “It does not seem that dirty to me. To me, it literally does not even register in my brain anymore.”

In the film, two friends find their friendship tested when they decide to make a porno. Rogen thinks it’s the sexual suggestions that freak out the ratings board, who seem to be fine with the violence of films like Hostel.

“I don’t know why. To me, it’s a mystery that you can show these horrific things but not some sexual stuff which everyone does.”

Makes no difference to me! I'll still be there either way. However, I'd rather it WAS an NC-17 rating, that way we know for a fact none of the really funny shit got cut out.

Seth Rogen is Zack, Elizabeth Banks is Miri, and they're gonna make a porno!

This is the best news to ever happen in new ever. I have been a huge Kevin Smith fan for many many years now. And After seeing 40 year Old Virgin Seth Rogen instantly became one of my favorite actors. Now the two are combining for a mega comedy. Elizabeth Banks also starred in 40 Year Old Virgin. The following is from Variety.com

The movie will begin shooting in January 2008 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The announcement was made today by Harvey and Bob Weinstein, co-chairmen of The Weinstein Company and Dimension Films.

"Getting Seth in this flick is like suddenly growing an extra six inches in the crotch," said Smith. "And as if that wasn't awesome enough, we scored the comedically and aesthetically gifted Elizabeth, too. Cast-wise, I'm now extremely well-hung."

Smith added "I wrote the part expressly for Rogen because he's a funny as fuck comedy god and we're insanely lucky he said 'yes.' Dude coming on board is a total mitzvah. And in order to show my appreciation, as well as fit in better with Seth, Harvey and Bob, Scott and I will be converting to Judaism. Bar Mitzvah invites are in the mail."

Seth Rogen will top-line this comedy as Zack and Elizabeth Banks will play Miri. Zack and Miri are two lifelong platonic friends who are deep in debt and enlist the help of their friends to make a porno movie for some quick cash. But as everybody starts "doing" everybody, Zack and Miri realize that they may have more feelings for each other than they previously thought. Additional cast will be announced soon.

Bob and Harvey Weinstein stated, "We could not be more thrilled that Seth Rogen and Elizabeth Banks are on board for this movie which is certain to be the next great chapter in our long and successful relationship with Kevin and Scott. Once again, Kevin has written a daring and entertaining screenplay that has attracted some of the most talented comedic actors working today. We look forward to working with Kevin, Scott, Seth and Elizabeth in creating another fantastic film for their millions of loyal fans and movie lovers everywhere."

Zack & Miri Make a Porno marks the latest collaboration between Bob and Harvey Weinstein, Kevin Smith and producer Scott Mosier who have created many successful and popular films over the past 13 years including Clerks, Clerks II, Chasing Amy, Dogma and Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back.

Michael Cole, co-head of production, and Carla Gardini, senior vice president of production, will oversee the project on behalf of TWC and Dimension Films.

Michael Cole and Eric Roth, executive vice president of business and legal affairs, negotiated the deal on behalf of TWC and Dimension Films.
