Heroes: Season 3 Finale Roundup

Spoilerphobes beware! Spoilers ahead. I repeat for you dumb kids, SPOILERS AHEAD.

So last night the 3rd season of NBC's Heroes came to it's end, and I have to say, it was pretty fucking fantastic. Yes, the better part of the this season was weak (we'll blame it on the Villains arc), but when they went in to the Fugitives arc, the show really picked back up. Some could say it has a lot to do with Bryan Fuller returning, but in all honesty Fuller's only had an impact on the last 3 or so episodes. The show has been really good since... say... the plane crash. I think that's when - for me - it really turned back around. The addition of Zeljko Ivanek to the show brought an interesting dynamic. Sylar being the sole villain was really getting told, and Ivanek (an Emmy winner) brings a certain amount of downright creepiness to whatever show he is on, be it Damages, True Blood, Big Love, or Heroes. Yes, he's on 4 different shows.

So let's talk about last night. We saw a momentary recap of how last week's ep ended, before plunging in to the fast-paced Stop Sylar plot. By now, Sylar had incapacitated Nathan Petrelli and Danko, and was headed off to meet with the President. All he wanted to do was shake his hand... and in turn, be able to dopplegang in to him. Angela Petrelli had a dream telling her how to stop Sylar and save Nathan, and so she set the wheels turning. Thanks to a set up from Sylar, Danko was incarcerated and shocked to find his cellmate was the man with the Horn-Rimmed Glasses. Noah informed Danko of what was happening and explained how he went 20 years operating in the morally "gray area" when it pertained to the Specials. Suddenly, mid conversation they freeze, and we see that Hiro and Ando have made their way in to Building 26, and freed all the enslaved Specials. Meanwhile, everytime Hiro freezes his time he starts to bleed out of his nose or ears and gets a bad headache - which Mohinder is quick to diagnose is just Hiro's body reacting against the mutation in his jeans. While Noah watches on from a monitor, he doesn't see Danko sneaking up behind him with a syringe full of elephant tranquilizer, but just as Danko goes in for the kill, Hiro pops up behind him and not only snatches the needle away, but pumps it right in to Danko's jugular. Unfortunately, this time freezing causes Hiro to apparently stroke out, and he drops in to Ando's arms.

Cut back to Peter who has found and rescued Nathan. They're heading in to the hotel to find and defeat Sylar, not knowing that he has Claire captive and is looking to make her his eternal love slave. Just as Peter and Nathan reach the room, Claire explodes through the door. Peter and Nathan rush in, knowing Peter just has to get close enough to touch Sylar and steal his power. The doors slam shut, and (my one gripe) we miss out on what appeared to be a very large electric fight. Claire finally gets back in the room, only to see that Nathan has flewn out the window with Sylar. Claire helps Peter to his feet, and they rush off to catch up with Nathan. Cut to Nathan and Sylar landing in a different hotel room - Sylar uses his telekinesis power and puts Nathan in a chair, and then in a shocking turn of events, Sylar uses the same power to slice Nathan's throat clear open, and we're left watching as Nathan Petrelli dies, bled to death from the wound.

Now here's where things got really interesting. Eventually Angela, Noah, and Matt Parkman arrive at the hotel and find Nathan. Sylar is gone, off to meet the President. In order to do this, Sylar kills and morphs in to the President's head advisor and then climbs in the limo - only SURPRISE - when Sylar shakes the President's hand, nothing happens... and that's because the President is actually Peter, who stole Sylar's morphing power in the earlier fight. Before Sylar can react, Peter thrusts a second syringe full of Elephant Tranq up in to Sylar's jaw, and he drops. Back in the hotel room, Angela has a nervous breakdown at the sight of her dead son, and that's when Noah hatches his plan. Now, I'll admit, I'm a little confused how everything went down at this point. We cut to what appears to be a different room now, and find a passed out Sylar on the couch, Angela, Matt Parkman, and Noah look on. Noah and Angela are pleading with Parkman to fix the situation, and we find out that they want Parkman to wipe Sylar's mind clean, and replace it with all the thoughts and memories of Nathan Petrelli. They know that if Nathan has all of Sylar's powers, he'll be unstoppable, but he'll be a good guy.. he'll be Nathan. So Parkman procedes to clean Sylar out and then convince him that he is in fact Nathan Petrelli, and in one final move, Sylar morphs in to Nathan, who wakes up asking for his mom.

So Sylar is gone, and Nathan is back... sort of. The Heroes then all gather around a huge pyre, ala Luke and Darth Vader, as they burn the body of the guy who morphed in to Sylar.. the one Sylar stole the power from. I'm assuming at this point they did this for Claire and Mohinder's benefit. Maybe Peter too? You never get an explanation as to how Sylar ended up back in the hotel room, and you don't know for sure if Peter knows his brother is dead. Claire is most definitely out of the loop, as is Suresh. Nathan promises to make things right and fix what happened with the President. Noah pledges his allegiance, and together they decide to make a new Company. Then, we cut to the 6 weeks in the future. We're in the apartment of some old Building 26 agent, and his apartment is flooded. As he looks at the water in the floor, it suddenly takes the shape of a naked Ali Larter! It appears the Ice Bitch is back, and now she's mastered the control of water. Needless to say, she kills the agent after telling him he's next on a list. Cut to Nathan in his office reading the paper, the story telling of 6 random drownings in the area. Could this be Tracy? Duh... but Nathan doesn't know that. Angela comes to visit, and notes that Nathan is acting a little strange, and thats when he makes his way across the room to a little clock, which he states is a minute and a half off, and it's been driving him crazy. The End.

So what do you guys think? In some ways, the episode felt more like a series finale with the open but resolved end, but at the same time it left open some questions that will hopefully be revealed in the next part of the sage, Redemption.

I figure I need to be more active, and I can do this from my laptop at night on the couch, beer within reach. I'm gonna try out a new weekly column (history will show I've always failed at this), and just point out some things I really like at the moment. So here goes.

1. I Love You, Man - Saw this tonight and I can't say enough good about it. Probably Paul Rudd's funniest movie to date, and definitely a big step up for Jason Segal from that Forgetting Sarah Marshall. I wish I could forget the awful date I went on to see that movie. Fuck.
2. TV Show Finales - Big Love, Eastbound & Down, and Battlestar Galactica*. Frak, this past weekend was packed with some TV season finales, and in one case *series finale. My neighbor is watching the news on his back patio and just burped really loud. It echoed. Wtf? But anyways, all three shows put on a .... show. BSG wrapped up nicely, kind of like a cannoli. I'm sorry to see it go, but happy with how it did.

4. My new iPod Touch. I didn't want an iPhone, because I hate AT&T service (funny all things considered) but I did want all the fun apps. So I got a touch, and it's fucking awesome. I'll probably do a whole separate post about it... so stay tuned or w/e.
5. Pita Pit. Delicious, healthy, pitas... who could ask for more? Think Subway, but without bread that's been sitting out all day, you get a warm fresh pita. The Gyro is the best, with feta and olives. Mmmm.
6. Heroes. Everyone is giving Heroes a lot of shit still, all these comic book indie nerds on the internet. But let me tell you something, Heroes is the fucking shit right now. Quit yer belly achin nerds, and fuck off with your Watchmen, and watch Heroes.

Yeah alright so there you go. Proceed with talking shit in the comments like a bunch of predictable cunts.

Heroes Fans Need To Relax.

Everywhere I read, message boards, magazines, news sites, everyone if bitching about how shitty Heroes is this season. And it makes me really confused because to me, this season is the best yet. What I find dumb is last season, everyone was bitching about how there was a real lack of any kind of villain last season, so this season is based around villains so you would think people would be happy about that right? Nope. Gotta bitch and whine more.

You know what the problem is? Nerds. You can't please them no matter what you do. And a majority of Heroes fans are nerds. No matter how faithful to the comic film makers try to make their comic movies, nerds STILL get pissed off and have to bitch about something. 300 was the most faithful adaption of a comic I have ever seen, so what do nerds say? WAH THERE WAS TOO MUCH SLOW MOTION!! Hey guess what you're talking about adapting something you were a huge fan of, and you know what that is, STILL IMAGES THAT DON'T MOVE AT ALL! So of course, no matter what people do, Heroes is still gonna piss nerds off. They bitches about season 1, then they bitched about season 2. So in season 3 the writers tried to fix everything that people bitched about, and they do. People wanted more Sylar, they got it. People wanted more villains, they got a shitload. People wanted less of this person and more of that person. They got it. They bitch this season about how shitty Hayden Panettieres acting is, which is dumb cause she hasn't acted any different since season 1, so what do creators do last night? Have an entire episode without her except for 1 small scene which was from the first season and she has no lines! So what do they do? Complain about it all. Wah last night was a flashback episode and it was pointless!! No it wasn't I fuckin loved last nights episode. It answered questions that I had, such as is Angela a villain or a hero? Why did Sylar go crazy and start killing off tons of people to begin with? How come one guy can throw blue fire and Claires Mom can throw normal fire? Oh they're related! Makes sense. Done and done.

In my own words, to the complainers out there. Shut the fuck up. This season of Heroes is awesome. So stop whining, and just enjoy the god damn show. Stop reading into it damn much. And to Heroes creators, keep up the work, you're doing just fine.

Could Heroes be Saved After All?

News broke late yesterday that original Heroes scribe, and current Pushing Daisies creator, Bryan Fuller would consider returning to Heroes, if Pushing Daisies does indeed get cancelled. Currently, there's only a 13 episode order in for the sophmore season of Daisies, which would have the show running out of episodes in January.

Fuller spoke exclusively to Entertainment Weekly, telling them: "I am exclusive to Daisies through the delivery of the 13th episode of our 13-episode order, which will be mid-January. If Daisies isn't picked up by then, I will definitely be going back to play with my friends at Heroes."

For many fans of the show, especially those of us who preferred the first season over anything that came after it, this is a great bit of news. Fuller, who began as a part-writer for Heroes, eventually worked his way up to entire episodes, including the widely popular episode, "Company Man". The episode, which was HRG-centric, took us down a path we're used to seeing on shows like LOST. Fuller made a short chore of unlocking the secrets behind "The Man in the Horn-Rimmed Glasses" and many fans have hailed this as Heroes' best episode ever.

Myself personally, I'm a bit torn. I'm a big fan of Pushing Daisies and would hate to see it come to an end, but if it meant Fuller returning to Heroes and getting that show out of the shiteous slump it's currently in, then I would be okay with that. With the firing of Jeph Loeb and Jesse Alexander, Heroes is finding itself in need of some new creative process... otherwise, it might be the show we find on the cancellation shelf.

I love Wikipedia.

I'm sure my usual critics will label this post as useless, or stupid, much like my posts about Kevin Costner and Canadian Murderers... but I don't care. I feel a need to profess my love for the greatest website, and information tool known to man: Wikipedia.

To begin, it marvels me that such a resource of endless information even exists. I find it entirely remarkable that people have come together on the net for something other than arguing about Kevin Smith movies and playing World of Warcraft, to not only create such a site, but maintain it with such fanatic consistency.

Today, I had a thought that I wanted to remember where I knew the actor Christopher Eccleston from. I'm rewatching the first season of Heroes on DVD, before the release of the second season of Heroes, and as you may recall he plays the part of Peter Petrelli's "mentor"... the Invisible Man. Imagine my surprise when Wikipedia was quick to inform me that DUH he played the Ninth Doctor, on one of my favorite shows, Doctor Who. With his costume and character on Heroes, I didn't recognize him at all. So that was cool, it answered my question. What came next was a little less expected. I've been a fan of the modern incarnation of Doctor Who, of which the 4th season just ended on Friday night on the Sci-Fi channel, but I was either not alive or not exposed to British television when the show was on in the 80s.

So, with the help of Wikipedia, I was able to read all about Doctor Who, filling in information gaps that have plagued me for the last few years. There were DOZENS of pages full of information about The Doctor and all this companions. For the sci-fi nerd inside of me, it was incredibly fulfilling. I can now call myself something of an information afficionado for Doctor Who.

Then, I saw a blurb about Joss Stone getting cast to portray Anne of Cleaves, on the Showtime hit show, The Tudors. I am also a fan of this show, and in my curiosity I decided I would once again peruse Wikipedia, this time for information about Henry the 8th, and his wives. Again, pages upon pages of information came across my screen, filling me in on all sorts of stuff I didn't know before.

I guess it's kinda dorky if you want to look at it that way, but there's just something really awesome about a database that HUGE, that has that much information in it. I mean, I only looked up information about TWO topics and I was seriously hooked. Was Wikipedia around when I was in High School? That would have been awesome!

More casting on new Star Trek movie: Starship Enterprise

John Cho and Simon Pegg have boarded the Starship Enterprise.

Cho has been cast as Sulu, the Enterprise's helmsman, while Pegg has signed on to play Scotty, the ship's Scottish chief engineer, in J.J. Abrams' "Star Trek" feature for Paramount.

The "Trek" casting deals appear to be closing at warp speed this week, with Eric Bana signing on Wednesday to play the movie's villain, Nero.

Already on board are Zoe Saldana as Uhura and Anton Yelchin as a young Chekov, the Russian-born navigator, as well as Zachary Quinto as a young Spock. Leonard Nimoy, who originated the role of Spock, is on board as well. Chris Pine is in talks to play the young Kirk.

The movie is expected to shoot from November-March.

Plot details are begin kept under wraps, but it is understood that the movie chronicles the early days of the Enterprise crew. The lead roles remaining to be cast are Christopher Pike, the first captain of the Enterprise, and Kirk's parents.

Montgomery "Scotty" Scott was the ship's third-in-command and was known for his problem-solving abilities in plot-critical situations. The role was originated by the late James Doohan.

Lt. Hikaru Sulu, known for his love of fencing, always was seen on deck piloting the ship next to Chekov. George Takei played the character in the 1960s TV series and the 1980s movies.

Cho starred as Harold in the cult hit "Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle." He is reprising the role for the sequel. Cho is repped by Gersh, Principato/Young and attorney Alex Kohner.

Pegg, repped by CAA, starred in "Shaun of the Dead" and "Hot Fuzz." He next toplines David Schwimmer's comedy "Run, Fat Boy, Run."

The current Entertainment Weekly (the one with Hiro on the cover) contains an article authored by Jeff Jensen. It discusses season two of “Heroes.”

* Why didn’t Peter just fly into the sky by himself at the end of last season? An EW excerpt:

''It's all about Peter's mental state,'' says Ventimiglia. ''He was so focused on stopping this power coming up from within him, he couldn't tap into anything else.'' Coleman teasingly suggests that expectations may have blinded viewers to the possibility that Sylar was diabolically manipulating the entire denouement, from his apparent defeat to Peter's paralyzing meltdown. ''Maybe we needed to play that up some more,'' allows Coleman. ''But I think there was a slyness that some people missed.''

Other interesting info from Jensen’s piece:

* In perhaps another nod to “Watchmen,” somebody gets killed in 2.1 and the first half of season two is a murder mystery. (Hiro’s dad and Claire’s grandma seem to believe they’re targets as well. I’m guessing the worse-than-Sylar boogieman little Molly referenced last season is the culprit.)

* Peter stars the season locked away, and with amnesia.

* Nathan, believing Peter dead, has descended into alcoholism and starts the season with a giant beard.

* In sunnier Costa Verde, Calif. (which doubtlessly neighbors Neptune and Sunnydale), Claire comes to date another superhero (played by Nick D’Agosto, who also played Jan’s assistant on “The Office”).

* Papa Noah Bennet is going after his old bosses. (Possibly with the help of Sylar??)

* Mohinder, Matt and Molly the little mutant-finder are all living together. (With Matt’s pregnant wife?)

* Jessica/Niki gets a virus that only affects superheroes, presumably the one that killed Mohinder’s sister and vexes Molly.

* Molly’s “worse than Sylar” boogieman is identified in 2.5.

* Hiro, who gets busy with a princess, may not return to the present until 2.8.

* Many questions about the season-one cliffhanger will be answered in 2.8, titled “Four Months Ago.”

* Sylar leaves the series around 2.16 to play Spock in the movies but is expected to return at season’s end.

* We’ll discover that several mutants share the same superpowers.

* Stephen Tobolowski (Ned from “Groundhog Day”) is introduced as a Primatech boss.

* The characters introduced in next April’s spinoff “Heroes: Origins” could join the mother show or be spun off into their own series. For those who overlooked Harry’s post on Saturday (or Kring’s announcement on G4’s “Attack fo the Show” earlier in the week), big-screen writer-directors John August (“The Nines”), Michael Dougherty (“Trick ‘r Treat”), Kevin Smith (“Clerks II”) and Eli Roth (“Hostel”) will be among those creating “Origins” episodes.

* Ando will find himself shuttling between New York and Japan, where Hiro is presumably leaving him clues from 400 years in the past.

* Dana Davis (“The Nine”) will play Micah’s hot superpowered cousin Monica, who - post-Katrina - works in a New Orleans fast-food restaurant. Nichelle Nichols (“Star Trek”) will play Monica’s grandmother.

* Claire’s new boyfriend, who has the same superpower as her biological dad, seems to have encountered Claire’s adoptive dad in the past.

* Claire gets a new California cheerleading rival, May, played by Janel Parrish (“Bratz”) and a lesbian cheerleader pal named April.

* Claire and Nikijessica will finally meet.

* Jessica Collins (“The Nine”) will play a superpowered Primatech thug named Sophie. She speaks French.

As they get closer to the U.S., Maya (Dania Ramirez) and Alejandro (Shalim Ortiz) make a grim discovery on the road. Heroes: The Complete First Season on DVD Review

The first-season DVD set hit stores on Tuesday, and here's a pretty cool interview with the cast and crew about the making of the show. It breaks down their comments episode by episode, so you can see what Tim Kring and Ali Larter thought of the pilot, how Hayden Panettiere dealt with the ep where she was "killed," etc.

Other people quoted in the piece include Milo Ventimiglia, Jeph Loeb, Zach Quinto and Adrian Pasdar. The new season starts Sept. 24.

Tis the season...

...The Season Finale Season that is!! It's that time of year, the time most people in the business commonly refer to as "May Sweeps". I, however, like to call it Season Finale Season! This past week, and next week are chock full of all sorts of big time season finales. On my list alone, there is LOST, Heroes, Grey's Anatomy, E.R., American Idol, Brothers & Sisters, and a few others. Tonight, we saw two of those shows take their summer break bows.
Grey's Anatomy, which aired at 9pm - EST, was possibly the heaviest of all the finales. I'm sure many of you readers out there found yourselves reaching for the Kleenex, I know I did!! There were bombshells being dropped in that episode than in the Korean War!! Next up, was the always exciting E.R. finale, which aired at 10pm est. E.R. always promises to have the biggest and most exciting finale, and in the past couple seasons, I would have agreed with them hands down...but this season was a little disappointing. Sure, we got to see Shane West with his legs cut off, but we missed all the real action there. He was already wrapped up by the time we got to him! Then, the end of the episode left us a with a mild cliffhanger, but do any of us really care if Neela is going to get trampled to death or not? I know I don't! And what about Abby? Am I the only one who thinks she just walked out of County General?

On from tonight's shows! Next week, we have the huge finale we've all been waiting for!! You know what I mean - HEROES!! From what I hear, Creator Tim Kring says that this finale, which finally sees all of our Heroes finally arriving in New York City, is the equivalent of a $90 million dollar action movie! If that doesn't wet your freaking appetite, I dunno what the hell will! Also, the chubby telepath known as Greg Grunberg (Matt Parker), spilled the beans, revealing that the final three minutes of this season are also the first three minutes of next season! What could that possibly mean? NBC's commercials show a big Syler - Peter confrontation, and God knows we've all been looking forward to that for long enough! Maybe we'll finally see them come to blows in the ultimate battle of who's more badass. I'm most excited to see just who it is that actually ends up being the Big Bomb...though my intution tells me the whole thing won't actually go down. With Monday out of the way, we move on to the biggest live finale all year...
AMERICAN IDOL! In one of the most exciting seasons ever, we are down to the two finalists...Blake and Jordin. This past week, we were all shocked to see Melinda Doolittle
ousted, no one as much as Simon Cowell. Tuesday night, the final two will compete against each other, both singing 3 songs, including the song that will be their big first single, in the event that they win. On Wednesday night, we'll see who this year's winner is, but not until we've sat through several guest stars and guest performers. Maybe even some witty banter between Cowell and Seacrest...

But after that...we get what we're all really waiting for.

LOST.

Nothing promises to be more exhilarating, exciting, and jaw dropping than the big 2 hour "game changer". That's right, show creators Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse promise that this season finale, unlike all the others, will be nothing short of intense. They promise to leave you begging for more, and you will, since the show won't return until February of next year. Fans of the show, all around the world are hoping to finally find out just what the
Others are up to, and where they came from. Will Charlie survive? Will Penny finally find Desmond? Will Jack choose between Juliet and Kate, and where will Sawyer fit in to all of it? And what about the man with more questions circling him than anyone else......John Locke? Is he alive? Is he dead? And what about Jacob??? I realize that Idol will be running up against Lost...but let me tell you right now, I couldn't give two hits of squirrel shits whether Blake or Jordin are the next AI, so long as I find out what the hell is going on around that island...

Devon's Spidey 3 Review!...sort of.

Originally Tony and I were expected to maybe have contrasting points of view about Spiderman 3, but in the end, we ended up having basically the same opinions. Which might explain why we're as good of friends as we are...so rather than repeat most of the same things he had to say, I'm going to do my own spin on a Spiderman 3 review...

First and foremost, the thing I took from Spidey 3 more than anything else...

Bryce Dallas Howard is WAY hotter as a blond. Damn! The ill-fated Gwen Stacey outshines the droll Mary Jane Watson in this movie, in every way imaginable. Fans of the classic comic already know Gwen's unfortunate outcome, and if they go through with making more of these franchise blockbusters, I'm sure we'll see it take place in one way or another. In this movie, Gwen Stacey, portrayed by Bryce Dallas Howard, is the alternate source of female attention for Peter Parker, once he's cast out by Mary Jane. It's during this part of the film that we're treated to a new Peter Parker. A Peter Parker most of us aren't used to seeing....Peter Parker meets Queer Eye for the Straight Guy! Peter, under the spell of the black symbiote costume, finds himself attracting women left and right, and it's during this scene that we see him undergo a transformation from nerdy shy guy, to suave and sophisticated hip cat. His fashion switch looks like something only Carson Kressley (pictured right) could dream up. Suddenly we find Peter escorting the beautiful Miss Stacey to aswank jazz club, complete with singing waitresses...enter Mary Jane. What ensues next, is the closest thing you'll ever find to ridiculous in this trio of movies, but if you're a fan of Sam Raimi, it's something you should come to expect. People not familiar with Sam's work, are most likely going to bawk at the scene, but regardless of how cheesy it is or not, it still serves its purpose. All of this however, leads me to my only real gripe for the movie.


Peter's hair.


I'm not sure if it was part of Raimi's vision, or something the costume designers thought up, but the blatant use of Tobey Maguire's bangs, in combination with black eye liner, and what I assume was black Manic Panic hair dye, we were forced to bare witness to....EMO SPIDERMAN. Good lord... It's not just that, there's even a clip where Parker stops in front of his mirror, and pulls the bangs down over his eyes. The sheer fact that Parker would go out of his way to pull his bangs down, makes me question the sexuality of the symbiote. Suddenly, I'm staring at the screen, not sure if I'm watching Heroes, sitting at a Bright Eyes concert, or reviewing a DVD copy of Little Nicky. Either way, this whole "emo" Parker thing was - for me - the worst part of the movie.


Did I mention how hot Bryce Dallas Howard was?
